ABSTRACT

As an industrial chemical, bisphenol A is widely used in various food packaging materials. However, it is an endocrine disrupting chemical, which has estrogen activity and can cause certain damage to humans. So far, there are few studies on the detection of bisphenol A in self-heating food packaging materials, and there remains a lack of relevant standard. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a simple, sensitive and efficient method for the detection of bisphenol A in self-heating food. This study briefly introduces the pretreatment methods of bisphenol A, such as ultrasonic extraction, solid phase extraction, accelerated solvent extraction, and detection methods, such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, fluorescent detection, and electrochemical detection.

ABSTRACT

Objective To provide theoretical reference and practical basis for accurately choosing the suitable packaging forms for different Injections. Methods Based on the raw materials in the common packaging forms of injections, the research and application progress on different packaging forms for injections were reviewed by analyzing the characteristics and technical requirements of different packaging forms, and the current registration information of pharmaceutical packaging materials in the Center for Drug Evaluation, NMPA were introduced. Results For preparations with small single-dose and low-cost, the ampoules or injection vials could be chosen. Powder injections are usually packaged in injection vials. For rescue medicines and valuable medicines, the pre-filled syringes could be chosen. For chronic disease treatment drugs (such as insulin) that require long-term injection, or some injections for emergency use, a pen-type syringe package that patients can inject themselves could be used. Neutral glass packaging or plastic packaging should be used for some acidic or alkaline. Conclusion The drug manufacturers should comprehensively consider the physicochemical properties of drugs, the performance of packaging raw materials, compatibility test results, price-cost, and convenience in carrying and use when choosing the appropriate packaging form to ensure the quality, safety, and effectivity of drugs.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To assess the availability of different promotional strategies applied for UPF sales in Brazilian food retailers. METHODS Information available on food packaging was gathered from all packaged products sold in the five largest food retail chains in Brazil in 2017. UPF were identified using the NOVA food classification system. From this sample, data related to promotional characteristics, nutrition claims and health claims were collected and coded using the INFORMAS methodology. Additional claims referring to the Brazilian Dietary Guidelines were also collected. RESULTS This study evaluated the packaging of 2,238 UPF, of which 59.8% presented at least one promotional strategy. Almost one third denoted a simultaneous use of different promotional strategies in the same packaging. Nutrition claims were the most commonly found promotional strategy, followed by health claims and the use of characters. The food subgroups comprising the highest prevalence of promotional strategies on their labels were: noncaloric sweeteners (100.0%), breakfast cereals and granola bars (96.2%), juices, nectars and fruit-flavoured drinks (92.9%), other unsweetened beverages (92.9%), and other sweetened beverages (92.6%). CONCLUSIONS Considering the poor nutritional quality of UPF, the widespread presence of promotional features on their packaging highlights the need for marketing restrictions on this kind of product.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To evaluate the effect of packaging materials and storage temperatures on the microbiological quality of Hibiscus sabdarifa drinks produced with: 1) commercial pineapple flavour (HCPF) and; 2) Phoenix dactylifera (38%) and pineapple extract (2%) (HPPE). Methodology: Pasteurized drinks packaged in polyethylene sachets, plastic and glass bottles were stored at refrigeration (4.4±2oC) and ambient (25±2oC) temperatures for 27 and 9 days respectively. Results: There was significant (P≤0.05) decrease in total bacterial count in HCPF (≤4.51-≥2.14 Log10CFU/ml) with higher death rate (0.06) in plastic bottles at 4.4±2oC while at 25±2oC it increased significantly (P≤0.05) in HPPE samples (4.00-≤4.95 Log10CFU/ml) with least growth rate in plastic bottles (0.02). Yeast count at 25±2oC (1.28 – 2.15 Log10CFU/ml) was significantly (P≤0.05) higher than at 4.4±2oC (1.00 – 1.60 Log10CFU/ml) and drinks in plastic bottles had the least growth rates (≤0.03). Coliform (2.04 – 2.59 Log10CFU/ml), Escherichia coli (2.00 – 2.93 Log10CFU/ml) and Staphylococcus (2.00 – 2.50 Log10CFU/ml) sparingly detected, were unable to grow in the drinks with greater inhibition at 25±2oC in all packaging materials. No growth of Salmonella was observed in the drinks. Glass bottles favoured more microbial growth but the levels were satisfactory for all packaging which is indicative of microbiological safety. Conclusion: Any of the packaging material can be used for packaging of Hibiscus sabdarifa drinks with storage at refrigeration temperature for ≤ 21 days. It is informative to both consumers and producers that the then wasted pineapple peels can serve as an ingredient in Hibiscus sabdarifa drink production.

ABSTRACT

In current year, there has been enhancing in the usage of plastic and disposal of waste coming from daily life. Various type of plastics are using for our daily needs, in order to reduce the impact of petroleum based plastics and other waste to be considered and focused on green plastics. Polyethylene are the polymers which can be produced by repeating the single units. It is one of the bittersweet coinage for human's better life. But this coinage causes a lot problems to the environment. To overcome this problem an alternative and eco-friendly Polyethylene is introduced called bio- polyethylene. Bio-polyethylene are from natural biomass sources. Among various source, starch has chief role in production of bio-polyethylene due to its low cost and nature abundance with plasticizers such as glycerol and vinegar. Starch based bio-polyethylene has good mechanical properties, tensile strength and biodegradability. Cellulose also used as source in development of biodegradable polyethylene. In this review starch and cellulose has led to their great innovative uses in food packaging and to improved biodegradation and mechanical properties.

ABSTRACT

The perishable nature of flowers urge for their appropriate post harvest management especially storage and packaging that keep the quality and potential vase life for better value. Gladiolus, commonly called as Sword lily, is a commercially important cut flower crop with elegant spikes, bright florets and good keeping quality. In the present study, we investigated the physiological and biochemical attributes affecting post harvest life of gladiolus spikes after packaging and storage. The spikes of four gladiolus cvs. Punjab Glance, Punjab Glad-1, Punjab Glad-2 and Punjab Pink Elegance were harvested at tight bud stage and packed in PP sleeves (25 ?m) and stored vertically at 4-5°C for 6, 9 and 12 days. After storage, the post harvest quality of both packed and unpacked spikes declined with more adverse effect on unpacked spikes. Among different storage durations, the spikes stored for 9 days showed good keeping quality parameters viz., vase life, per cent flower opened, floret size, days to opening of basal floret, maximum number of florets open at one time and water absorbed per spike which were at par with spikes stored for 6 days. The spikes stored for 12 days were found to be unacceptable in comparison to freshly harvested spikes and spikes stored for 6 and 9 days. The improved quality of spikes stored in sleeves could be accounted due to higher membrane stability index, relative water content, catalase and peroxidase activity as compared to unpacked spikes. Thus, loss in quality of spikes as compared to fresh during storage up to 9 days in PP sleeves is better than the complete loss of produce during transportation and gluts. Hence, the spikes of gladiolus could be stored dry at 4±0.5°C in PP sleeves for 9 days without much influence on its post harvest quality.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the primary and secondary labels of plantbased medicines. Method: This research has a cross-sectional and descriptive. The procedure consisted of analyzing 100 labels of medicinal plant-based products used by elderly people from (in) Macapá-AP, in 2017. A script was prepared to verify their adequacy to health standards based on the Brazilian legislation (commercial name, botanical nomenclature, active ingredients, concentration, route of administration, age-restricted use, quantity and pharmaceutical form, preservation care, company name, CNPJ - Brazils's companies registration number, composition, SAC, expiration date, manufacture and batch), descriptive analysis of the data was performed (protocol number 38400314.9.0000.0003). Results: Only 4% of the products completely met the analyzed criteria. One of the main problems observed was the absence of a uniform standard of presentation of information on the packaging. About 7% of these products did not present any information besides the popular name of the medicinal plant used, 37% of the packages (or labels) contain statements and images that induce self-medication, errors in use, or references to "natural medicine", besides, transmitting the idea that the product has superior properties to drugs on the market. Conclusions: The results obtained suggest that the packaging of medicinal plant-based products induces the irrational use of medicines due to the lack of adequate information, as well as the presence of inadequate makenting strategies, in accordance with current national legislation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To construct a HEK293 cell line stably overexpressing TrxR1 as a cell model for functional study of TrxR1 and screening of TrxR1-targeting drugs.@*METHODS@#TrxR1 gene was amplified by PCR and ligated with the lentivirus expression vector pLVX-Puro, which was transformed into Escherichia coli and identified by Sanger dideoxy sequencing. HEK293 cells were infected with the recombinant lentivirus vector (pLVX-Puro-TXNRD1) and screened with Puromycin for cell clones with stable TrxR1 overexpression (HEK293-TrxR1-OE cells). HEK293-TrxR1-OE cells, along with HEK293 cells infected with pLVX-Puro vector (HEK293-NC) and normal HEK293 cells, were tested for mRNA and protein expression levels of TrxR1 using RT-qPCR and Western blotting. TrxR1 enzyme activity in the cells was evaluated with insulin endpoint assay and TRFS-green probe imaging. The sensitivity of the cells to auranofin, a specific TrxR1 inhibitor, was determined with CCK8 assay.@*RESULTS@#TrxR1 gene was successfully inserted into the lentiviral vector pLVX-Puro as confirmed by DNA sequencing. The enzyme activity and mRNA and protein expression levels of TrxR1 were significantly higher in HEK293-TrxR1-OE cells than in HEK293 and HEK293-NC cells (P < 0.005). The inhibitory effects of auranofin on proliferation and cellular TrxR1 enzyme activity were significantly attenuated in HEK293-TrxR1-OE cells as compared with HEK293 and HEK293-NC cells (P < 0.005).@*CONCLUSION@#We successfully obtained a HEK293 cell line with stable TrxR1 overexpression, which shows resistance to auranofin and can be used for screening TrxR1 targeting drugs.

ABSTRACT

ERα-36 is a novel subtype of estrogen receptor α which promotes tumor cell proliferation, invasion and drug resistance, and it serves as a therapeutic target. However, only small-molecule compounds targeting ERα-36 are under development as anticancer drugs at present. Gene therapy approach targeting ERα-36 can be explored using recombinant adenovirus armed with decoy receptor. The recombinant shuttle plasmid pDC316-Ig κ-ERα-36-Fc-GFP was constructed via genetic engineering to express an Ig κ-signaling peptide-leading secretory recombinant fusion protein ERα-36-Fc. The recombinant adenovirus Ad-ERα-36-Fc-GFP was subsequently packaged, characterized and amplified using AdMaxTM adenovirus packaging system. The expression of fusion protein and functional outcome of Ad-ERα-36-Fc-GFP transduction were further analyzed with triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells. Results showed that the recombinant adenovirus Ad-ERα-36-Fc-GFP was successfully generated. The virus effectively infected MDA-MB-231 cells which resulted in expression and secretion of the recombinant fusion protein ERα-36-Fc, leading to significant inhibition of EGFR/ERK signaling pathway. Preparation of the recombinant adenovirus Ad-ERα-36-Fc-GFP provides a basis for further investigation on cancer gene therapy targeting ERα-36.

ABSTRACT

【Objective】 To investigate the influence of different packaging methods on the volume of low-dose(0.5 U) suspended leucocyte depleted red blood cells(SLD RBC) and provide reference for accurate labeling. 【Methods】 Bags of SLD RBC in 1.5 U and 2 U were randomly sampled to measure the weight and specific gravity of each bag, so as to estimate the blood volume. The relationship between the weight and volume of 0.5 U blood, split from different parent bags, was analyzed and the linear regression equation was put forward. The regression equation was used to calculate and analyze the difference in the volume of 0.5 U SLD RBC prepared by three different packaging methods (A: manual multi-bag average packing; B: instrument multi-bag average packing; C: manual single-bag packing) in actual work. 【Results】 The specific gravity of 1.5 U (38 bags) and 2 U SLD RBC (39 bags) were (1.090±0.011) g/mL and (1.097±0.013) g/mL, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). After the 0.5 U subsidiary bags were split from the parent bags(1.5 U or 2 U), the regression equations for the volume (Y) of 0.5 U and gross weight (X) of the whole bag were respectively: Y1.5 U packing=0.902 7X-12.52 (P<0.05) and Y2 U packing=0.905 6X-13.15(P<0.05). In actual blood packaging, the average blood volume of 0.5 U subsidiary bags split from 1.5 U bag, using method A and B, were smaller than those split from 2 U bag [(62.12±5.38) mL and (62.50±6.77) mL vs (67.72±3.81) mL and(68.39±6.44)mL] (P<0.05), with the deviation of low-dose blood volume from 5.593 mL to 5.887 mL.The volume deviation by method B (10.84% and 9.42%) were greater than that by method A (8.67% and 5.63%). The average volume of 0.5 U subsidiary bags split from 1.5 U and 2 U by method C were (65.49±1.72) mL and (64.99±1.91) mL (P>0.05), with volume deviation at 2.63% and 2.94%, respectively. The mean volume value of overall 0.5 U blood (n=483) was (65.35±5.34) mL. 【Conclusion】 For packaging 0.5 U subsidiary bags, the instrument multi-bag packaging showed the largest volume deviation, followed by the manual multi-bag packaging and the single-bag packaging. The volume labeling of low-dose SLD RBC should be established, according to the specifications of parent bags and specific gravity.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the factors affecting the quality of post-harvest Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) and to provide the corresponding suggestions according to these factors. Method:A series of factors affecting the quality of Baizhi were analyzed comprehensively by visiting several origins, medicinal material markets, pharmacies, supermarkets and storehouses combined with plenty of literature reports. Result:The rot of Baizhi was the most common phenomenon after harvest, and mildew, discoloration and moth could occur during the processes of processing, storage and packaging. So the quality of Baizhi should be controlled strictly through the whole process. The roots of Baizhi should be harvested on sunny days to avoid mining damage and dried as soon as possible to prevent rotting. The drying methods included both traditional lime burial and modern ways such as sulfur fumigation, saline dehydration, sun drying method, and oven drying method. However, the water content should be strictly controlled. Furthermore, the storehouses should be disinfected firstly. The temperature and humidity of the storehouses should be controlled strictly. Some suitable ways could be adopted to prevent moth and discoloration during storage, which included airtight fumigation of aluminum phosphide, cold storage, air conditioning maintenance, antagonism storage with other Chinese medicinal materials, dry ice storage at room temperature, etc. Large quantities of Baizhi were generally packaged in woven bags. Otherwise, kraft paper bags, polyvinyl chloride plastic bags, glass bottles, aluminum foil composite film bags, and other packaging materials had been adopted for the retail. However, the packaging specification should be selected according to the situation. Conclusion:The quality of Baizhi can be directly affected by harvesting, drying, processing, storage and packaging. Scientific and reasonable methods should be adopted to ensure the quality of Baizhi.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT 'Agraz' (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) is a native blueberry from Colombia, being the fruit a globose berry, with nutraceutic quality due to an excellent source of antioxidants and is used as an ingredient for food preparation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical-chemical properties of fruits stored during 12 days, at a temperature of 2°C and a relative humidity of 90%. Fruits with two stages of ripeness, color break, an immature state (associated with red color), and fully pigmented (100% purple pigmentation) were stored, packaged in two different plastics recipients, one bioriented polyethylene and the other mono-oriented polypropylene. The results indicate that immature fruits demonstrated a prolonged preservation of the total soluble solids, when combined with the mono-oriented polypropylene packaging, otherwise TSS were significantly increased in mature fruits, packaged in mono-oriented polypropylene, affecting fruit metabolism and carbohydrate reserve. The pH diceased in all treatments, between 6 to 12 days after treatment, coinciding in turn, with the increase in total titratable acidity during the same period.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the adoption by the WTO DSB of the Panel Reports that resolved the disputes against the Australian tobacco plain packaging scheme unveil important aspects of international health law intertwined with international trade law. Objectives: this paper aims at understanding the concept of plain packaging and the scope of the WTO decision for countries envisaging the adoption ofsimilar measures in policymaking. The research questions are descriptive and encompass how the position expressed by the WTO DSB affects the WHO FCTC and what legal reasoning the referred decision used. Methodology:ahistorical method is employed to identify the origins of plain packaging and the main concerns and challenges surrounding it, whilst a discursive analysis of the Panel Reports allows an interpretation of its basic principles and possible implications for public health policies. Results and discussion: from a microeconomic policy analysis, the standardization of tobacco packets is a reasonable regulatory approach at a government's disposal for addressing welfare losses due to externalities and internalities. Although there is no consensus on the empirical evidence supporting plain packaging, its assessment by the WTO Panel played a vital role in the decision rendered, notably with respect to Article 2.2 of the TBT Agreement and Article 20 of the TRIPS Agreement. Conclusion:Honduras and Dominican Republic have appealed and consequently a final ruling is still pending. Nonetheless, the decision is so far a recognition under WTO law of a State's regulatory autonomy to implement the necessary measures on behalf of public health.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The study aimed to evaluate different packaging materials at different storage conditions for improving the shelf life of guava fruits.Methodology: The guava fruits (Cv. Sardar) were stored at ambient and cold storage conditions (10°C, 90% RH) in four packaging materials viz., Cellulose acetate film bags (CAFB), Breathing bags (BB), Polypropylene bags (PPB) and Brown paper bags (BPB). The quality attributes like physiological loss in weight, colour, fruit firmness, sensory score and biochemical parameters such as non-reducing sugars, reducing sugars, total sugar, acidity, ascorbic acid, Total Soluble Solids (TSS) and pectin were evaluated. Results: There was significant effect of packaging materials and storage conditions on quality of guava fruits during storage. The average weight loss at ambient condition irrespective of packaging material was twice (0.86 % per day) than that of cold storage condition (0.41 % per day). The average weight loss irrespective of storage conditions was highest for control fruits at ambient condition (1.88 % per day) and lowest for the fruits packed in Polypropylene bags (0.018 % per day). The fruit firmness decreased with storage period. Non-reducing sugars, reducing sugars and total sugars increased initially and subsequently decreased. Titrable acidity, ascorbic acid and pectin reduced and total soluble solids increased with advancement of storage period. Sensory evaluation revealed that fruits stored in cellulose acetate film bags and breathing bags at cold storage conditions could achieve shelf life of 18 days with high overall acceptability. Interpretation: Studies revealed that the guava fruits can be stored upto 18 days in cellulose acetate film bags and breathing bags at 10°C with 90% RH storage conditions with acceptable sensory score.

ABSTRACT

Genome packaging is a fundamental process in a viral life cycle and a prime target of antiviral drugs. Herpesviruses use an ATP-driven packaging motor/terminase complex to translocate and cleave concatemeric dsDNA into procapsids but its molecular architecture and mechanism are unknown. We report atomic structures of a herpesvirus hexameric terminase complex in both the apo and ADP•BeF3-bound states. Each subunit of the hexameric ring comprises three components-the ATPase/terminase pUL15 and two regulator/fixer proteins, pUL28 and pUL33-unlike bacteriophage terminases. Distal to the nuclease domains, six ATPase domains form a central channel with conserved basic-patches conducive to DNA binding and trans-acting arginine fingers are essential to ATP hydrolysis and sequential DNA translocation. Rearrangement of the nuclease domains mediated by regulatory domains converts DNA translocation mode to cleavage mode. Our structures favor a sequential revolution model for DNA translocation and suggest mechanisms for concerted domain rearrangements leading to DNA cleavage.
